Christian Schwartz is a partner, with London-based designer Paul Barnes, in the type foundry Commercial Type. Schwartz has published fonts with many independent foundries, and he and Barnes have designed proprietary typefaces for corporations and publications worldwide.
A graduate of the Communication Design program at Carnegie Mellon University, Schwartz first worked at MetaDesign Berlin, before returning to the US where he spent two years on the design staff at The Font Bureau, Inc. in Boston, working for a wide range of corporate and publication clients, before moving to New York and setting up his own studio in 2001.
Schwartz has been named to the ranks of the 40 most influential designers under 40 by Wallpaper* magazine, and was also included in Time magazine’s 2007 “Design 100.” He is a recipient of the prestigious Prix Charles Peignot, awarded periodically by the Association Typographique Internationale to a young designer who has made “an outstanding contribution to the field of type design.” In addition, the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum, the New York Type Directors Club, and the AIGA have honored Schwartz’s work.
