New Font: Quiosco by Cyrus HighsmithMay 23, 2006. Boston Font Bureau, Inc. is proud to release Quiosco, an original news text family by Cyrus Highsmith. Kiosk in Spanish is Quiosco, the name of a text series (after Prensa) designed by Cyrus Highsmith that follows W.A. Dwiggins in deliberately contrasting character outline with the counter shape. Highsmith addresses the narrow news column by bringing new life to the forms of a newspaper text face while adding nothing to character width. Quiosco permits more compact wordspaces with no loss of readability. Quiosco is the fifth addition to Font Bureau’s Readability Series, a suite of graded fonts specifically drawn to withstand the rigors of printing on cheap paper with high-speed web presses. News publishing methods may reproduce type faithfully, may add some amount of weight, or may reduce it by a fraction. Seventy years ago, C.H. Griffith prepared graded weights of Linotype Excelsior, encouraging publishers to choose the weight best matching image to inking. Font Bureau offers grades 1, 2, 3, and 4. You choose the grade yielding the best final image through your current platemaking and printing practices.
