The nautical and historical appeal of Virginia Beach makes it one of America’s great vacation capitals. When Deborah Withey became Deputy Managing Editor for Presentation, she instinctively knew to look at the surroundings for inspiration. Her choice of typography followed this chord and went so far as to say “a newspaper is like a person in the community and speaks to its readers through typography.”
Commissioning her ensemble included new styles of the bold and finely tuned Vonness by David Berlow, and the serious and sophisticated voice of Displaybaum, Matthew Carter’s inspired versions of Walbaum which was adapted for headlines by Richard Lipton.
With beautiful accent Richard Lipton’s Sloop recalls the penmanship of our early forefathers. Praises were sung on the redesign for “its eclectic mix of southern charm and urban waterfront.” FB2007
