Whitman“It occurs to me that I frequently focus primarily on the Roman design. But the Italic is really lovely in its own right, and really comes off quite gracefully. Not too contrasty and none of the copperplate, split-nib modern stress of the Caledonia italic. Not radical like the Joanna italic. I think I tried about nine variations on italic before I landed on this pairing for Whitman. Now that it’s done, it looks inevitable. The slope is modest, and although it is narrower than the roman, it maintains an open character that I think makes it relatively readable. I think it might do well just on its own. Or for poetry maybe.” |
