“After some extensive searching for a name I finally landed on Whitman. And it seems to have been a good fit. There’s the association with literature; there’s Walt Whitman’s celebration of the physical, common everyday reality; his plain-spokenness.

“I also think of the typeface as having an essentially “American” quality. I hesitate to bring that up nowadays, because of our society’s current nationalistic fervor; that’s not the kind of American that I mean. But there’s a quality of American literature and letters that I think was epitomized in the beginning of the 20th century and captured by Dwiggins, Updike, Conkwright, Blumenthal, that whole crowd. I hoped to capture some of that distinctively “American” voice in Whitman and I think the name is fitting.
