Whitman
In Kent Lew’s words “When I started Whitman I personally had no fondness for most Moderns or Scotches (I’ve since come to appreciate Caledonia and especially Matthew Carter’s Miller, but I still don’t like Bodoni or Didot. Respect? yes; like? no.)
“In a way, I suppose, I designed Whitman as a Modern for those of us who don’t like Moderns. It has that rationality and balance and symmetry, but I tried to avoid the cold, brittle contrast and hard geometry of most Moderns. The Whitman serifs are plain and unbracketed, but not flat, fine, or sharp.”
